Interview mit Molybaron aus Paris/France

Rock Magazine: Karina aus Deutschland und Nicolas aus Paris;

Was waren eure Einflüsse außerhalb von Metal?

Was kommt zuerst: Musik oder Texte?

Nicolas: Die Produktion eures Albums klingt riesig.

Schaut trotzdem rein!! Wir hoffen, euch bald „on the road“ zu sehen.

Quelle: https://www.molybaron.com/

Interview with Molybaron from Paris/France

Rock Magazine: Karina from Germany and Nicolas from Paris;

For Molybaron: Steve (guitar)

Karina: Hi Steve, thank you for taking the time for this interview. What is the current situation for musicians in Paris?

Steven: Hello Karina and Nicolas, Thanks for your time and your questions. In Paris, and France, it´s a weird time for musicians. All the music places are closed, and we are just waiting for the opening. Even the rehearsing place aren´t open yet. So we just work on our music on our side, and we just looking forward to play again.

Karina: You are the guitarrist of the alternative/progressive Metal Band Molybaron. Lets talk about your bandname. It ´s coming from the lyrics of Thin Lizzys Whiskey in the Jar [Being drunk and weary I went to Molly ´s chamber] and the songtitle The Last Baron from the band Mastodon. I read that you had to change the name on the release day of your first abum? What was the reason?

Steven: At the begining we had a first name, but quickly we realised it wasn´t good enough. The music was here, but we had to find a name. And after a lot of brainstorming, we ended up with Molly Baron. We were very happy with it, it s mysterious and it can be anything. Unfortunately, the day we were sending the album for print, we just realised that this name was already took… Again, we brainstormed very quickly, Gary did a lot of quick typo test, and we chose to remove a L and to stick the two words together : MOLYBARON. In The end we are very happy with it.

Karina: How did you get into music? Is it true that you were born with rock music?

Steven: It’s totally true. Rock music has always been there since my birth. My parents met at a Deep Purple show in Paris, and my name is a reference to Steven Tyler – so… I was kind of born in music. I still have old tapes at my parents house of me, baby, sleeping quietly with Megadeth or Pantera in the background. After a few years playin piano, i just took a guitar around my 15, and after years and years of getting my neighbours crazy with my horrible playin, it began to sound better and better.

Karina: You also joined the tour with A Pale Horse Named Death. How Do you prepare yourself for gigs? Do you have rituals backstage?

Steven: Yes we supported them during their Euro Tour and it was an amazing experience. We learned so much, and we really grew up together as a band and a family. We didn´t have any rituals backstage, expect the fact that we warm up our fingers, body, voice… And sometimes, when it’s a big stage, we just gather together and we just say a few words, like « lets smash the place » and putting everything, the good and the bad, in our set.

Karina: Your first album named Molybaron was widely praised by critics. Rock Hard Magazine named Molybaron „Best Discovery Act of 2017′“. When will the the second album be released and what is the title?

Steven: The second album is already recorded, artwork is done, we just wait the right moment to release it ! We already released two songs, which are working pretty well, so.. Let ’s wait and see. For the album title, I cannot tell you now… but soon!

Karina: What are your lyrics about, and which other bands inspires you? Please describe your sound.

Steven: Lyrics are written by Gary, and they talk about things he s concerned with, like the ecology, politics… About the sound, it’s hard to describe it.. It’s a melting pot of a lot of bands, but even if there are some similarities, we didnt tried to copy anyone, and this mix gaves us an unique identity. Having catchy chorus, and groovy and heavy riffs, is giving us a very recognizable sound.

Nicolas: Just a quick listen to your music induces you guys have a wide musical culture. Outside metal, what have been your influences ?

Steven: Metal is huge word that opens a lot of doors to thousands of subgenre. I listen a lot of different style of metal, from Iron Maiden to Mastodon and Dillinger Escape Plan. But i m also a huge fan of Pink Floyd, classical music. Gary, the main composer of the band, is a fan of Metallica, but also movie music, like Hans Zimmer. Music that became a visual experience.

Karina: How Do you write your songs? What is first, music or lyrics?

Steven: Usually, Gary came with a riff, and an idea. And he records it and shares it, ask us for our feedbacks, what can be improved. Sometimes we jam… and, when we end up with something good, he records it on his phone to put it on his computer. Sometimes i record riffs on my own and send it to him, and see what we can do about it. We just take the best ones, to have the best material. But Gary has a precise idea of what is good and what will go on the bin, or put beside, but we trust him blindly cause everything he s doing is just pushing us forward. After he writes the lyrics, sometimes he ask us for a subject or little part of lyrics, and then he build them around.

Nicolas: Gary’s words go way beyond the simple „words over music“. You can feel the need to express deep thoughts and dig deep. Is Molybaron any kind of catharsis?

Steven: A lot of the lyrics within the album are deeply personal to Gary and to events or emotions that have affected his life – the things a person isn’t comfortable discussing openly. Writing these thoughts or feelings down as lyrics is a form of release. So yes, you could say the tracks are a means of catharsis.

Karina: Gary is born in Dublin and works by day as a graphic designer. He designed the cover of your first album. Did he designed the cover for the second album, too?

Steven: Gary is an amazing graphist, who worked with a lot of huge bands like U2, and what he did with the first album was really great. It’s a real chance to have a graphist amongst the band. For the second album, we wanted something totally different, so we searched for months to find THE one. Then, he sent me an artist and amongst his picture, there were the future cover. I told him « man… This one.. is insane » and he agreed. A few days after, we came back to this specific image. I cannot say more, but we are very proud and happy of the new cover ! Wait and see !

Nicolas: Life of a young band is pretty harsh nowadays. Your first album was a self-release. What would you expect from a label for the next one? Did you find a label now that fits to you?

Steven: It’s true that it’s a hard time for new bands. We have to constantly work and fight for making people listen to our music. The first album was self released cause we were totally unknown, and it recieved a lot of amazing feedbacks (discovery of the year of Rock Hard Mag, TOP 5 of dozens of webzine…) and a lot of people were totally hooked to us, waiting for the next one. We are currently looking for a label, and we received some offers but we have to think of what s the best for us. I can not say anymore, but things are moving and evolving in the background.

Karina: You published a music video to the song Lucifer. What is the song about?

Steven: We released our first single, Lucifer, a few month ago, during the lockdown. Gary wrote the song and the lyrics, and it’s simply a metaphor to describe a dependency on a drug to give the illusion of happiness, the crutch

Karina: For the song Twenty Four Hours you worked togther with Withfield Crane from Ugly Kid Joe. How did the collaboration come about?

Steven: We were having a gig in Paris, and a friend of mine came with Whit to our show. We went on stage, and, just after our intro, no sound. We were just standing in front of a big crowd, without any sound from the amp and the speakers. So we asked the people to make a lot of noise, and then, the gig started very powerfully. At the end of the show, Whit came to us, saying he really enjoyed our gig, the music, and how we dealed with this sound issue. We spent the rest of the evening with him, he was really nice and fun, and we proposed him to jam with us in our studio (you can see a little bit on youtube), then we had diner, and a drink, and we proposed him to sing a song on the next album. He was really opened to it. We stayed in touch, and Gary sent him the song 24 Hours. He immediately fell in love with it, and he recorded his voice. We are very proud to have him on this tracks.

Karina: Is there any funny story you can tell us about the tour or the recordings of the new album?

Steven: There s no particular story i can tell… Every day, every gig has his own story, with the funny moments. once, we were playing in Lyon and we decided to cover Emerald by Thin Lizzy. But we only practiced it one hour, and our previous drummer didn´t know the song. So, when we played it, everybody was doing a different part from each other. It was really funny, we were all looking at each other, knowing we weren´t on the same moment, laughing but still we continued the song and tried to ended it cleanly. After that, no more Emerald ahah ! Once we had a car accident, hiting a moto leaving Paris. We saw the guy slide on 20 meters on the floor… Thankfully he wasnt injured. Once we arrived to a gig and i just realised i forgot my guitar… A lot of stupid and funny stories ! We have a real family spirit between us, we have the perfect mix between being funny and being serious and professional.

Nicolas: The production of your album sounds huge. Is this something important to you, knowing that your songs could be as efficient played unplugged sitting around a bushfire?

Steven: It’s really important for us to sound the best we can. Gary spent days and days building it, and we are very proud of the production because of his amazing job. For this second album, we leveled up everything, with heavier songs, faster and more punchy. It was logical for us to have an more aggressive production. It’s true that the fact that our song are easy listening makes them totally suitable for unplugged version. You can find on youtube two versions unplugged of our songs Moly and Only When Darkness Falls, and we had a lot of fun adapting it for acoustic instruments. Same for a gig we had to do unplugged at the last moment, cause our previous drummer couldnt come. The result is great and it’s not impossible that we ll do acoustic version of future songs.

Karina: Have you planed live gigs this year? How hard this Corona break hits you?

Steven: We had a few gigs and festivals that have been canceled with the pandemic. We are currently tryin to build new shows, but it’s a strange time. Bands that were supposed to play in 2020 are going to be postponed in 2021. But in the same time, bands that are releasing music in 2021 will want to tour and play in 2021 too.. It’s going to be hard to get a place, but we are obstinate to show the world our music.

Karina: Would you like to say a few words to our readers?

Steven: Thanks for reading this interview, and go check our new songs, and the first album ! If you like Metallica, Mastodon, Alter Bridge, Rage Against the Machine, early Muse and even U2, come take a look ! And even if you don’t like these bands… still Take a look !! We hope to see you on the road really quick.

Karina: Thank you for your time! We are looking forward to your upcoming album and hope to see you live in Germany and maybe also Austria as well as soon as this Corona-thing is under control.

Steven: Thank you for your time and forgive me if i m doing some language mistake. I m french and i m doing the best i can ahah. We hope to see you soon. Take care of you !
